Paolo Mazzanti (MSc in Geology and PhD in Earth Sciences) is Professor of Remote Sensing at the Department of Earth Sciences of “Sapienza” University of Rome and Co-founder of NHAZCA S.r.l., Startup Sapienza University of Rome. Paolo is the organizer and scientific leader of several international courses including the annual “International Course on Geotechnical and Structural Monitoring” that, in the last 8 years, attracted more than 700 people from 60 countries and 50 partners.
Paolo is responsible of consulting projects concerning tunnels, oil & gas, dams, open mines, large transportations infrastructures and landslides for National and International firms and agencies, in 10 countries. Paolo is member of the TRB (Transportation Research Board) Engineering Geology Committee and of the informal FMGM (Field Measurement in Geomechanics) committee and associated with several scientific associations (e.g. ISHMII, AIGA).
Paolo tutored and co-tutored more than 30 MSc and PhD theses in Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering and Remote Sensing and has been invited lecturer at several International Universities and Research Centers (e.g. Italy, France, UK, Ireland, Norway, Austria, Germany, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Hong Kong, Belgium).
Paolo is author of about 100 scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings concerning the following topics: a) engineering geology (landslides, subsidences, settlements, snow avalanches); b) geological remote sensing; c) geotechnical and structural monitoring; d) monitoring by ground based and satellite radar; e) monitoring of civil structures and infrastructures, including cultural heritages; f) geotechnical assets management.
Giorgio is an independent consultant with his Company SMAK s.a.s. since 2015.
He worked for ISMES, an applied research and service centre of ENEL (Italian Electricity Board) for almost 20 years as responsible of the geotechnical and structural monitoring units, being involved in many large and critical projects for dams, tunnels, landslides, bridges, foundations, hydrometeorological and environmental projects all over the world.
In 2000 he established FIELD, where he served as Technical Director till 2014, continuing his activity of system design, field assistance and data evaluation and management.
Giorgio is a member of ISO TC 182/WG2, which is responsible for drafting European Standards on Geotechnical Monitoring and is vice chair of ISSMGE TC220 Field Monitoring.
D. Jean Hutchinson is a Professor of Geological Engineering at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, and served as the Head of Department between 2009 and 2017. A registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Jean conducts research on the assessment and mitigation of geomechanics risks related to rock slopes and ground surface subsidence, with a view to developing decision support systems founded on data collected from a variety of collection and monitoring techniques, always considering geological models and mechanics. Jean advocates for and participates in experiential learning, including field based education, and the promotion of inclusivity and diversity in STEM subjects.
Dr. Hutchinson is the Vice President for North America for the IAEG (2018 to 2022) and is President of the Board for the Canadian Foundation for Geotechnique.
Jean has had the great pleasure to supervise over 40 graduate students, and to teach a wide variety of courses to several 1000s of undergraduate students. Dr. Hutchinson in collaboration with her students, as well as numerous research partners, has published 1 book, 9 book chapters, 60+ refereed journal papers, 90 full length refereed conference papers and 80 extended abstracts / non-refereed conference papers.
Dr. Hutchinson has been very fortunate to receive a number of awards, including most recently the Glossop Medal and Lecture from the Geological Society of the UK in 2019, the Canadian Pacific Railway Medal from the Engineering Institute of Canada (2017), the T. Geoffrey Flynn Advancement Champion Award from Queen’s University (2017), the inaugural Excellence in Engineering Education award, from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s University (2016) and the Robert L. Schuster Medal, jointly awarded by the American Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists and the Canadian Geotechnical Society (2016). Jean was also pleased to be named as one of 12 “First Women in Canadian Geotechnique”, by the Canadian Geotechnical Heritage Committee in 2018. In recognition of her work, Jean has been elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Davide Calonico is a metrologist, senior researcher at the Italian National Metrological Institute (INRIM, www.inrim.it), where he is presently the Head of the Division Quantum Metrology and Nanotechnology (70 people).
He is mainly involved in Time and Frequency (T/F) metrology, laser cooled atomic clocks and the dissemination of precise time over fibre. Since 2016, he is in charge of the Italian fibre link for T/F: 1800 km of fibres across Italy, from Turin to Matera and connected to the rest of Europe. The link is devoted to precise time distribution for science and industry, and quantum communications research (Italian Quantum Backbone). Since 2018 DC’s focus is also on using fibre infrastructures for telecommunications in seismic detection and monitoring, applying the coherent interferometry used on the Italian Quantum Backbone.
Manuel Gomez de Membrillera Ortuño is an Expert Consultant at Typsa, Spain. He obtained a PhD in Civil Engineering at the Universitat Politécnica de València, Valencia, Spain in 2007.
During his 20 years of experience, he built up a sound technical background in challenging hydraulic and environmental engineering projects, as well as business management experience, working collaboratively with clients and co-workers.
He has experience in water supply, wastewater, water resources management, risk assessment, flood risk management, hydrometeorological networks, training, monitoring and surveillance, dam safety, dam construction, hydropower, business management, feasibility studies and detailed designs where he’s worked in Spain, Uruguay, Brazil, Tunisia, Venezuela, Algeria, Peru, Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama, Guatemala, Ecuador, Italy, Austria, Poland, Turkey, Ethiopia and Pakistan.
He is Vice-Chairman of the ICOLD Technical Committee on Dam Surveillance. He also serves as a part-time professor at post-graduate and master programs, and as a coach in engineering training and capacity building events. He has been a university/college Professor for 14 years and is the author of 2 full-length books, and co-author of chapters in 2 other books, 7 research journal articles, and more than 50 conference papers and communications.
Louis Hattingh is Managing Director of a small consultancy, Hattingh Anderson Associates CC, based in Pretoria, South Africa since January 1999. After graduated with a Masters in Civil Engineering from Stellenbosch University he joined the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa in 1992 doing dam safety evaluations using risk analysis under the mentorship of Dr Chris Oosthuizen. He has continued to use risk analysis in all dam safety evaluations ever since. Following a short stint with BKS (Pty) Ltd after leaving DWA he started his own consultancy in 1999.
Louis has been working in dam engineering for the past 29 years. His experience is mainly focussed on dam safety evaluation and behavioural engineering (specifically surveillance and the proper interpretation thereof) as well as numerical modelling techniques (including hydraulic modelling) and flood hydrology. He is also been a member of Expert Panels for the Safety Evaluations of a number of large dams in Ghana and Lesotho. Recently he has provided technical assistance with the implementation of dam safety programs in a number of African countries including Zambia as well as the Eastern Nile countries of Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan and South Sudan.
He is current chairman of the ICOLD Technical Committee on Dam Surveillance as well as a co-opted member of the ICOLD Technical Committee on Dam Safety. He also is a past vice-chairman of SANCOLD (South African National Committee on Large Dams).
He has lectured and published widely on dam engineering related topics since the early nineties. (Authored and co-authored more than 60 papers at International and National Symposia, Conferences and Congresses). He has been actively training young engineers in South Africa in dam safety evaluations and proper surveillance since 2005. He has also provided training to other dam owners including NamWater and the Department of Water Affairs of Namibia, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa in Mozambique, Eastern Nile Technical Region Office in Ethiopia, the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Plan as well as dam operators from a number of African countries through the International Centre for Hydropower and students and engineers in Slovenia.
Dr. Marr founded and leads Geocomp, one of the foremost providers in USA of real-time, web-based performance monitoring of civil engineering structures, including dams, levees, deep excavations, retaining walls, tunnels, buildings, bridges and utilities. Allen also has extensive experience in testing to measure the mechanical properties of earthen materials, designing earth structures, determining the causes of poor performance of geotechnical structures and developing cost effective remedial measures for troubled projects. He has also been instrumental in applying methods of risk assessment and risk management to infrastructure projects. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineers and the Moles. He has published widely and given invited keynote lectures around the world on topics in geotechnical engineering, performance monitoring, data management and risk management.

Dr. Matarazzo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Associate Director of High-Performance Computing with the Center for Innovation and Engineering at the United States Military Academy, West Point. He has held research and teaching appointments at MIT, Cornell Tech, Columbia University, and Kyoto University.
Dr. Matarazzo’s research interests mobile sensor networks, intelligent infrastructure, data-driven condition assessments, vehicular sensor networks, and automated management protocols for structural systems. The central theme of his research is to leverage digital data, connected devices, and computing to advance the service of cyber-physical infrastructure systems. He has over thirty publications including articles in flagship journals, e.g., ASCE, MSSP, IEEE. etc. He is currently leading research to better understand how crowdsourced mobile smartphone data from vehicle trips can support bridge maintenance. He is the lead author of a 2018 article in the Proceedings of the IEEE which was the first to show that smartphone data collected within vehicles passing over a bridge can be aggregated to detect modal frequencies of the bridge. He is a recipient of several awards, most recently Microsoft AI for Earth.
Andrea Nardinocchi is a senior professional engineer with a successful career which combines interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with more than 25 years of experience. Daniele Ortelli is Head of Loss Prevention for Generali Global Corporate & Commercial Italy since 2013 and for Assicurazioni Generali in Italy since 2008, when was assigned the task of growing the Loss Prevention Department in Italy as well as support the expansion of the international network.

Andrea Pigorini is a very experienced civil infrastructure engineer that has been working for more than 30 years in design and construction of very important infrastructural project in Italy and abroad, with a specific deep experience in tunneling and underground works.
He has been the responsible of Italferr Tunneling Design Department since 2002 and he is since 2015 the responsible of the Civil Infrastructural Engineering Department.
He was also involved from 2011-2017 in the Brenner Base tunnel works, where he managed has project manager a joint venture in charge of the supervision of the works of 2 important construction lots.
Andrea since 2013 is the President of the Italian Tunnelling Society – SIG, an open cultural association promoting an “underground culture” by sharing technical and scientific knowledge in engineering, design and construction of tunnels and underground works. SIG was a founding association in 1974 of the International Tunneling Association – ITA.
He carried out several training and education sessions on tunnelling engineering for internal and external personnel and he has been author of several papers on tunnel design and construction aspects, published in technical journals and international/national congress proceedings.
Fabien is Omnisens Group manager for Latin America activities and General Manager of Omnisens do Brasil. Since he joined Omnisens in 2007, he has been focusing on the development, the implementation and the promotion of distributed fiber optic sensing technologies in onshore and offshore energy infrastructures.
Fabien Ravet received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 2007. His doctoral thesis covered the study of Brillouin scattering fundamentals, its application to distributed sensing and its implementation to monitor concrete/FRP column deformations as well as pipe buckling development.
Fabien has over 20 years of experience in optical fiber technology and instrumentation. He built his expertise through several projects involving sensing and communication industries. More specifically, in the past eight years he has contributed to the development of the geotechnical monitoring of pipelines in tropical and seismic areas.
Fabien is author of more than 90 publications in peer reviewed journals and international conferences.
Marco Rettighieri, 63, graduated in Geology in 1982 at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and Civil Engineer at Imperial College of London in 1987, which was followed by the homologation of the same degree in Italy. After graduated, he held the position of head of the electron microscopy laboratory at the Department of Earth Sciences of the “La Sapienza” University. However, he decided to leave the laboratory to devote himself to the world of engineering and construction, starting with large industrial plants in the Middle East and North Africa, from the position of Project Engineer up to taking on the role of civil works manager. He was subsequently involved in the construction of the main Italian and European high speed railway works having been the investment director of the Italian Railway Network (RFI)-FS Group, General Manager of Italferr-FS Group and of the French-Italian company LTF-Lyon Turin Ferroviare.
He was General Manager of EXPO2015 managing to complete the works for the inauguration date. He was also General Manager of the ATAC company in Rome and then appointed Prefectural Commissioner of the Milan-Genoa railway section where he currently acts as President of the Consortium together with the office of President of the Iricavdue Consortium, high speed railway section between Verona and Padua. He has credit numerous technical publications both in Italy and abroad. He teaches Geological Coasts Cartography and Dynamic Oceanography at the “Kore” University of Sicily, as well as Project Management at the “Pegaso” Telematic University. He has participated to numerous conferences as a speaker on technical and project management topics at various Universities as LUISS and MIP.

Born in Pompei in 1967, graduated in Civil Engineering in Naples in 1992 with the highest honors cum laude. In 1996 he obtained the title of Doctor of Philosophy, and in 1997 he was awarded with a scholarship for a post-doctoral research topic jointly with the University of Ghent (Belgium) on the experimental behavior of piled foundations In 1998-1999 worked abroad with the Building Research Establishment (UK) participating in the monitoring of the underground extension of the Jubilee Line in London.
From 2000 to 2008 he held several courses in the field of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II and at the University of Sannio, Benevento. In 2005 he was appointed as associate professor in Geotechnical Engineering after a national competition in 2004. From 2009 he teaches in Polytechnic School of the Federico II the course on Foundation Engineering both in Italian and in English. From 2017 he is also involved in the Master course on Retrofit of historical and monumental buildings and in the Master course on Geotechnical Engineering for design of Federico II. From the 2019 he is involved in the Master course on Geotechnical Engineering of the University of Rome La Sapienza.
In 2003 he was appointed to act as a panelist for BAP IV International congress on the theme of “piled rafts.” In 2004 was designated from organizing committee of the Vth Int. Conf. On Case histories in Geotechnical Engineering (NY (USA)) to prepare the General report of the session Shallow and Deep Foundations. In 2005, he was designated as co-author by ISSMGE for the General Report on the State of the Art of Pile foundations on the occasion of the World Conference of ISSMGE in Osaka. He was co-author designated by the British Geotechnical Association for a keynote lecture at the Second International Conference on Foundations ICOF 2008 on the theme of the piles under horizontal actions. He was designated for deliver the Keynote lecture (2010). “Excavations in the urban environment: examples from the construction of Napoli Underground.” in the Proc. Int. Geotech. Conf. on Geotechnical Challenges in Megacities, Moscow, Russia. He was designated in the conference 7th International Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction-Rome May 2011 as panelist on the theme of the excavations of the Naples Metro Line 6. He was asked by the Scientific Committee to act as Discussion Leader organizer of the session “Tunnelling” at the XV European Conference of the European Association ESSMGE Athens 2011. He is author of nearly 150 scientific publications and a monograph in English, published by Taylor & Francis on the topics of shallow and deep foundations. He has been involved as Scientific Coordinator in most of the activities related to the monitoring aspects of two lines of Napoli Underground Networks: Line 1 and Line 6. In the frame of this context he acted as supervisor of the monitoring activities, collector of the data and user of the data for research purposes further than for safety issues. He has been recently elected as a member of the presidential council board of the Italian Geotechnical Association (member of ISSMGE).
Tony Simmonds is a Director at Geokon, Inc, Lebanon, NH, USA, a manufacturer of geotechnical instrumentation, where he has worked for over 35 years. He graduated from Portsmouth University, in the UK, in 1979 with an honors degree in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics. He is responsible for Geokon’s network of overseas agents, representatives and system integrators and travels extensively to support them both on site and in commercially related matters.
Among the many projects in which he has been involved, some of the most notable include the Three Gorges Dam (China), the Petronas Twin Towers (KL, Malaysia), Itaipu Dam (Paraguay/Brazil), the Central Artery Project (Boston USA) and the Potzdamer Platz (Berlin, Germany).
Tony Simmonds is an active member of the TRB (Transportation Research Board), DFI (Deep Foundations Institute), ISSMGE (International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering), and ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers); and has spoken at numerous courses and presented papers at various symposia worldwide.
Kenichi Soga is the Donald H. McLaughlin Professor and a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He obtained his BEng and MEng from Kyoto University in Japan and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. He was Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge before joining UC Berkeley in 2016. He has published more than 450 journal and conference papers and is the co-author of “Fundamentals of Soil Behavior, 3rd edition” with Professor James K Mitchell. His current research activities are Infrastructure sensing and modeling, Performance based design and maintenance of underground structures, Energy geotechnics, and Geomechanics. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). He is the recipient of several awards including George Stephenson Medal and Telford Gold Medal from ICE and Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize from ASCE. He is the chair of Technical Committee TC105 “Geotechnics from Micro to Macro” of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and is the chair of ASCE Infrastructure Resilience Division’s Emerging Technologies Committee. He is a Bakar Fellow of UC Berkeley, promoting commercialization of smart infrastructure technologies.
Mr. Sparrevik has a wide background in instrumentation and geotechnics, with more than 26 years experience from various offshore and subsea monitoring projects. His experience includes monitoring support and supervision during installation of offshore foundations. Mr. Sparrevik is a registered inventor with seven international patents, based on his multi-disciplinary experience. He presently holds a position as Technical Expert at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, being responsible for the “subsea technology” market.
Matteo Vagnoli (PhD in Risk and Reliability Engineering, MsC in Nuclear Engineering) is currently Analytics Manager at Swiss Re, managing advanced analytics projects for business performance optimization. Before joining Swiss Re, Matteo worked at Bombardier Transportation, leading end-to-end data science projects aiming at the development of advanced analytics strategies for assessing and predicting the performance of critical assets. Matteo also worked as Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research fellow at the University of Nottingham (UK), developing Bayesian and machine learning analysis for structural health monitoring, and as Research Fellow at Polytechnic of Milan (Italy) developing advanced analytics methods for risk-informed decision making. Matteo has a PhD in Risk and Reliability Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK, a MSc in Nuclear Engineering and a BSc in Energy engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy.
Eliano Romani is Head of the Engineering Department of Metro C S.c.p.A., that is the General Contractor charged with the design, performance, works supervision, and supply of rolling stock for the Line C of the Rome Underground. The Line C project is the first fully automated underground railway line in Rome and consists of 30 new stations and 34 km of TBM tunnels with about 10 km that run under the historical city centre of Rome.
With ten years’ experience on construction of underground lines and structures, Eliano designs in particular underground stations, TBM tunnels and tunnels excavated with the open face traditional method.
He received his MSc in Civil Engineering in 2004 at the University “Tor Vergata”, Rome, and in 2006 he began to work as Civil Engineer at Metro C, managing the geotechnical and structural design of several metro stations. In Metro C he learned a good competence in the use of innovative geotechnical technologies, such as soil ground freezing used in Metro C to excavate the tunnels that under crossed the pre-existing San Giovanni Line A station or the compensation grouting that is a method to reduce the potential interaction between the existing buildings and TBM tunnel excavations.
Leen de Vos (MSc in civil engineering and PhD in hydraulic engineering) is working as a geotechnical engineer for the Flemish Government for almost 15 years. She is the coordinator of the geotechnical monitoring cel within the Geotechnics Division of the Department of Mobility and Public Works (Flemish Government).
Leen’s main tasks include geotechnical and monitoring advise for large infrastructures or large construction sites within Flanders, drafting internal guidelines and technical specifications for public works and research and development within her group.
Leen is a member of CEN/TC 341/WG1 Task Group 2, which is responsible for drafting European Standards on Geotechnical Monitoring and a member of ISSMGE TC220 on Field Monitoring and ISSMGE 206 on Interactive Design.
Martin Beth is a geotechnical engineer, and has been working for Sixense (formerly known as Soldata) for more than 24 years, now as the group’s Technical Director and France Manager. Sixense is a large monitoring and instrumentation service company operating worldwide. Martin’s tasks include technical and operational support to complex monitoring sites, instrumentation systems design and general management support, and research and development within the group. Martin advises Sixense branches on large-scale projects around the world, for example in the past Crossrail in the UK, Bucharest Metro in Romania, Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement in the US.

Werner Lienhart is Full Professor and Head of the Institute of Engineering Geodesy and Measurement Systems (IGMS) at Graz University of Technology, Austria. Prior to this position, he was Product Manager Innovation at Leica Geosystems at the Headquarter in Switzerland.
He has more than 20 years of experience in the monitoring of civil engineering structures using geodetic, geotechnical and fibre optic sensors. Prof. Lienhart has published more than 140 papers and holds several patents. He is President of the Austrian Geodetic Commission (OeGK) and President of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII).
Furthermore, Prof. Lienhart is co-founder of ACI Monitoring, a company specialized in fibre optic sensing in civil engineering and geotechnical applications.
